The three layers of foreign spending costs

  • Card FX fee (0–3%): your bank’s surcharge for converting. $75 on a $2,500 trip at 3% — or $0 with any no-FX-fee card.
  • Dynamic currency conversion (4–8%): the terminal asks "pay in dollars?" — saying yes lets the merchant’s processor set an awful exchange rate. Always choose local currency. This single habit outsaves every points strategy.
  • Cash exchange desks (5–12%): airport kiosks with "0% commission" hide the margin in the rate. Bank-network ATMs abroad (declining DCC!) get near-wholesale rates.

Before the trip checklist

Get one no-FX-fee card (many free cards include it now); know your debit card’s ATM fee structure; carry a small cash reserve exchanged at a bank, not the airport; and rehearse the phrase "in local currency, please" — the cashier is incentivized to press the other button.

Where is the cheapest place to get foreign cash?

Bank-network ATMs in the destination (decline DCC at the machine), using a debit card with low/no international ATM fees. Airport exchange desks cost 5–12% via the rate spread.

Do fees apply to online purchases from foreign sites?

Yes — an FX-fee card charges the 3% on any transaction processed abroad, even from your couch. The same 0%-card fix applies.
