How the historical inflation formula works
Value in year B = Amount × (Index in year B ÷ Index in year A)
A consumer price index tracks the average price of a basket of goods over time. To convert money between two years, you scale by the ratio of the two years' index values. $100 in 1990 (US CPI 130.7) equals about $246 in 2025 (CPI 322.2) — prices roughly 2.5×'d over that span. The same maths applies to pounds, euros, and Canadian dollars using each country's own official index.

Every figure comes from the relevant national statistics agency and reflects the latest annual average available at the time of writing. Because these agencies publish once a year, the most recent year is refreshed each January. Why does the euro only go back to 1996?
The euro launched in 1999, but Eurostat's harmonised index (HICP) for the euro area begins in 1996. Before that there was no single euro-area price to measure — each country had its own currency and index.
